Inspiration
The “Maui Mike” song originated from a story a friend of mine told me about growing up on Maui in the 1960s. As Maui was growing population size then, the hippies that hung out at the beaches and lived off the land, began to all converge on the undeveloped section of Kihei.
That’s where the story of the simple Island life came to me in a dream about an guy named Maui Mike, the happy beachcomber that decided that all the riches of society really meant nothing to happiness.
I think there’s a little Maui Mike in all of us?
